TOPICS:
Uncial is a popular edged pen script that is a good script to
introduce beginners to calligraphy. It is historically important (In
use for about 1000 years) and like other scripts, has evolved in
form over the ages. Dave Kuwahara will review the basics of
Uncial, its evolution from the Roman settlements of North Africa
to the British Isles and present examples of its unique features
and applications.
SUPPLIES:
1. A couple pages of Layout Bond paper, any size, ruled to 4
nib widths height for the nib you’re using
2. Water soluble ink (walnut, gouache, etc) that won’t feather
on the paper
3. Edged nibs in straight pen holders, no smaller than
Speedball C2, Tape or Brause 2.5mm, etc
4. Cut quills or reed pens if you have them, don’t worry about
this if you don’t
5. Your usual calligraphy stuff in support of your lettering
